Profile: Remember the first time you left the country? Everything was new, the smells and sounds on voices and architecture. On my very first trip, a junket for the Swiss government to taste wines in Basel, we were sitting with Basel's minister of tourism in the dining room of its best hotel while he lauded us with what good citizens the chemical companies were in cleaning up the Rhine. About 20 minutes into our very PR breakfast, we watched the Rhine turn the color of blood, sirens blared and an emergency announcement said we could not go out. I want to tell travel stories that change who we are.
